Large black snake with white under head and underbelly 

How to identify:

Coloration:

Body uniformly black dorsally in adults;

 

some individuals with faint black stripes on a gray-black body or with juvenile pattern incompletely obscured

Adult Eastern Ratsnake typically measure (42-72 in) in length, the snake shown in the photo above was caught/photographed and recorded by Herpetologist Quentin Stiles and measured 52in long 

Habitat:

​Eastern rat snake habitat includes rough forested areas with ledges and rocks and small clearings near woods. They can be found in old barns or attics where they hunt rodents. They can climb and may be found in trees.

Range of habitat:

Eastern Rat Snakes are found throughout most of the eastern half of the U.S., with additional populations extending south along the Atlantic coast of Mexico.
